First of all, the title of the book is misleading. There is no 'lost' Diana there. The childhood is described as idyllic and care-free, there are no troubling or negative emotions there at all. The book is written like a court witness statement to white-wash Mary's stay with the Spencers and paint Earl Spencer as a flawless Father. This is a sugar-coated description of the aristocratic life in the countryside- nothing to do with Diana's emotions. Perhaps Mary was afraid she'd by sued by Frances Shan-Kidd for testifying against her in court?
