What can I say about this truly wonderful magical book! Susan Branch made me look at our beautiful English countryside in a whole different way! Following her journey and the places she visited, things she did and food she ate was an absolute treat for me! Its true what the others have said about it making you want to jump in the car and see for yourself right now! The best travellers guide to England ever! Full of hints tips information on where to stay, how to travel, best places to eat etc. I promise you will not be disappointed if you purchase this book!It is written in such a whimsical way with the most beautiful watercolour illustrations done by hand, photo's quotes etc. I have read it once and immediately have started reading it again! I have been a fan of Susan's for almost 20 years now but I think she has truly excelled herself with this book...It is most defiantly her finest yet! Nina

Susan Branch isn't too well known over here...hopefully that will change with the publication of this wonderful new book. I first bought one of her exquisitely hand-written and watercoloured recipe books over 20 years ago and have been in love with her ever since! I consider this book to be her best to date. It is essentially a diary of the trip that she and her beloved Joe took to England last summer. But it's SO much more than that! There are gorgeous vignettes of our countryside that make you look at the landscape in a different way. Chapters on Beatrix Potter, the National Trust, gardens like Sissinghurst, houses like Charleston and Jane Austen's home at Chawton...all woven through with inspirational quotes, fabulous photos and enchanting watercolour recipes, ideas for films to watch, books to enjoy, places to visit. It made me long to jump in the car and visit everywhere immediately! An absolute joy.

I discovered Susan Branch nearly 25 years ago whilst on holiday in Cape Cod and have all of her cook books and calendars. I love her recipes, detailed drawings, and quotes. This book is her best work yet - she has a wonderful way of describing the situation so that we feel as if we are there sharing every new discovery on this English holiday with her. Pure enchantment - I shall be giving this as a gift to special friends this coming Christmas. Highly recommended.

As a follower of Susan's Blog, and having followed her trip here in the UK via that blog I could hardly wait to get my hands on this amazing book. It is a treasure and a wonder. All of the artwork and writing are just delightful. It weaves a spell. Even my husband read it and was mesmerized. Part of the appeal is Susan's enthusastic approach to all things British and even having lived here in the UK and seen most of these places myself it is so refreshing to see them again through her eyes. It takes me back to the way I felt when I first moved over here from North America fourteen years ago. I highly recommend this book to anyone!! It is my favourite of all her books, and that is saying a lot, because they are each one pretty fabulous in their own right.

I've been a long time writing a review about this wonderful book. I've been a fan of Susan Branch for a few years [...]now and even though I'm English I really looked forward to the release of this book. I bought a copy for me, which I ended up giving away to someone desperate to read it, before I had glanced at it. I bought a copy for my mum for Christmas, but she finished reading it one evening and the next day started it again! So I finally got round to buying a third copy just for me!Susan's wonderful, evocative writing made me feel as if I were there with her and her charming watercolour illustrations are lovely. Whether you know the areas she visited or not it's a great read - poignant, funny and full of detail. She's currently writing another book. Can't wait!

A beautifully crafted book with plenty of observations and illustrations which details the author's pilgrimage to quite a number of our historic houses, many with a literary connection. You have to understand that it is the author's choice and that she is a big fan of Jane Austen and Beatrix Potter. What makes the book of interest to a British reader is that you have a foreign perspective (American) of our "treasures" - some of which are easy to guess such as ancient and venerable buildings whereas others are more obscure such as hedgerows. It is a selective and somewhat idealised journey but the places and people associated with them are here. Persevere with the language idioms and celebrate the fact that as a nation we have saved so much.

Of all Susan's wonderful books this is an outstanding example. Those of us who are lucky enough to be English often forget to really look and see the charm and beauty of our own countryside. It takes an Anglophile like Susan to inspire us to go out and find who or what is around the corner. A Fine Romance is a truly delightful diary that can be read cover to cover (in one sitting, as many of us who were eagerly awaiting its arrival did)or dipped into as the whim takes you. It includes extensive website references for further information. I have already bought two and will certainly be buying more.
