Hip Hop Raised Me® is the definitive volume on the essence, experience and energy that is hip hop, and its massive and enduring impact over the last 40 years. It’s packed with contact sheets, outtakes and glory shots of artists, collectives and fans off-guard and in action from iconic photographers including Martha Cooper, Henry Chalfant, Eddie Otchere, Normski, Janette Beckman, Chi Modu, Nabil Elderkin and Mark Humphrey, as well as photographs of hip-hop ephemera and vinyl courtesy of specialist collectors. With the help of his definitive catalogue of interviews with hip-hop artists from the 1990s to today, conducted at key moments in their careers and including Jay-Z, Kanye West, Eminem, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Drake, Nicki Minaj, J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan, DJ Semtex examines the crucial role of hip hop in society. He reflects on the huge influence it has had on his own life and the lives of many others, providing inspiration and purpose to generation after generation of disaffected youths. Taking a thematic approach and featuring seminal interviews he has conducted with key hip-hop artists, Semtex traces the characteristics and influence of hip hop from its origins in the early 1970s with DJ Kool Herc’s block parties in the South Bronx, through its breakthrough to the mainstream and advent of gangsta rap in the late 1980s, with artists such as Run DMC, Public Enemy and Ice T, to the impact of contemporary artists and the global industry that is hip hop today.Hip-hop artists have gone from hustlers to successful entrepreneurs and businessmen. Hip hop has come of age.Foreword by Chuck D.

This book is a hip-hop time capsule, I literally got goosebumps as I turned the pages and a tidal wave of memories flooded over me. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in hip hop culture and those who want to re-immerse themselves in this dynamic movement which is bigger than a musical genre. This book explores the evolution of hip hop culture from the 1970s to present day (primarily from a US perspective) in over 400 hundred pages, which includes colour photographs and flow charts. The book features a foreword from Hip Hop legend Chuck D (Public Enemy) and is organised in the following chaptersChapter 1: Long Live The DJChapter 2: The Golden AgeChapter 3: The Purple EraChapter 4: What's BeefChapter 5: Defining TriumphChapter 6: ObamanationChapter 7: The Home InvasionChapter 8: Fear of a White RapperChapter 9: Rap PrivilegeThis is the ultimate coffee table book, it's beautifully crafted and would make an excellent gift, I highly recommend it.

Art, music and books. The things that make my creativity soar. Finding them all in one thing is rare…but I did. When I pre-ordered my copy of 'DJ Semtex Hip Hop Raised Me' I didn't factor in a trip to NY making me wait over a month to return and finally get my hands on it. It was totally worth the wait. The first thing that hit me was the design. Large, heavy, black, white and gold, that tiny hint of red…all create the perfect start to this ride. Inside is even more impressive. The photography and words take you on a journey through the land of hip hop like only Semtex can. His intro into his personal life is incredibly touching in places and his clear love of all that is hip hop shines through in every single page. From DJs to Classic Soles. From Run DMC to Nas. From Queen Latifah to Lauren Hill. From Kanye to Kendrick and all the others who made and make Hip Hop what it is, everything and everyone you need to know and understand are within these pages. Read and learn from the man that understands the culture best DJ Semtex. This is the Hip Hop bible the world has been waiting on.
