    Book details

On February 16 2016, motorcycle adventurer Charley Boorman suffered a major road traffic accident in Portugal. Having spent the better part of his life on some form of motorbike, his world came crashing down after he was knocked off a Triumph Tiger Explorer, smashing his right ankle and causing severe damage to his left fibia and tibia. It was unclear if he would ever walk properly again, let alone ride a motorbike. Moving between past and present, Charley recounts the ambulance ride, the numerous operations in a Portugese hospital, the medivac aircraft flight back to London, and his entire journey of recovery. In alternating chapters, as his inability to walk for several months provokes introspection, Boorman recounts his childhood, where his passion for motorbikes began, and the formative influences in his life--from his father, a famed director, to his long-time friend Ewan McGregor, and Sean Connery's son Jason, who first introduced him to bikes. As Charley struggles to cope with this potentially life-changing situation, it is these touchstones who will give him strength on the long way back to health.

Charley Boorman has spent many years touring the world on his motorbike, sometimes accompanied by close friend Ewan McGregor, with whom he produced the TV series and accompanying bestselling books Long Way Round and Long Way Down. Further solo adventures have included Race to Dakar,By Any Means and Extreme Frontiers. He has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2009.

big fan of Charley Boorman, have seen him talk several times and have always loved his stories; wasn't quite prepared for just how emotional this book is, very honest and open and at times heartbreaking and then hilarious. Even if you are not a fan or have never even heard of Charley I would recommend this book as a real life affirming read, very inspiring

An amazing honest and intimate story of Charley's recovery from his accident told as only Charley can with great humour and optimism.

Some have said that the book doesn't flow but I disagree! It is an account of a time in Charley's life where he had to face the very real prospect that his life might change forever and has had to draw on previous experiences to get through it! I like the way it has pulled no punches and left me hoping that he is continuing to get better while planning the next adventure!

I like Charlie Boorman OBE (Only Because of Ewan), and always found him to be the inept buffoon but more talented on the tours that the pair of them made. This was a bit of a bike ride, a crash and the nervous "will he lose his leg or won't he"Spoiler : No he doesn't.End of story.

An interesting and engaging read. The way Charley keeps flitting between past and present can get a bit tiresome, but there's some interesting details of his growing up in Ireland and what comes across as a heartfelt, honest and sometimes painful healing process following an accident.

Good book, really easy read. Lot of motorbikey stuff that I didnt know what bikes he was on about, didnt matter though.

I personally love Charley ever since i got to know him from his trips with his pal Ewan. However, his writing style tends to be rather boring at time on this book. It was fun to read as it is a true story and i believe it speaks to the hearts and minds of all of us riding a bike and mostly bikers having a family.
