    Book details

Agatha Christie’s shocking courtroom drama, read on audio by her grandson, Mathew Prichard.

When wealthy spinster Emily French is found murdered, suspicion falls to Leonard Vole, the man to whom she hastily bequeathed her riches before she died. Leonard assures the investigators that his wife, Romaine Heilger, can provide them with an alibi. However, when questioned, Romaine informs the police that Vole returned home late that night covered in blood. During the trial, Ms French’s housekeeper, Janet gives damning evidence against Vole, but as Romaine’s cross-examination begins her motives come under scrutiny from the courtroom. One question remains, will justice out?

Some clever stories, though the short format meant the solutions were fairly easily found. The title story was the best of the bunch and the only disappointment was the Hercule Poirot story, only because he wasn’t much involved, though the solution was typically Hercule.

What a superb read. The recent TV production errs from the story and is all the worse for it. A masterclass in a short story!

There are some excellent and ingenious stories here but the quality is not always high. Even the marvellous Mrs Christie didn't write a winner every time. All the same, this collection is definitely worth buying to dip into if you like classic mystery.

Read these many years ago. Was good to revisit them and to enjoy again the inginuity of 's Christie"s mind.

This is a collection of enjoyable short crime stories with a twist at the end. Includes a couple of Poirot short stories.

All written on a small typewriter; and they sold in millions!

Loved re-reading The Witness for the Prosecution but the other short stories which were included were really great - all riveting reads.
