Tyrant, blackmailer, racketeer, murderer - his influence reaches every level of American society. Meet Don Corleone, a friendly man, a just man, areasonable man. The deadliest lord of the Cosa Nostra. The Godfather.

A modern masterpiece,The Godfather is a searing portrayal of the 1940s criminal underworld. It is also the intimate story of the Corleone family, at once drawn together and ripped apart by its unique position at the core of the American Mafia. Still shocking forty years after it was first published, this compelling tale of blackmail, murder and family values is a true classic.

"The narrative bowls along... to keep readers turning pages all the way to an explosive showdown." (Daily Mail)"Here is all the classic material of Mafia mythology... spins a spell all its own" (The Times)"The Godfather, one of the most entertaining and absorbing popular novels of the postwar period... Puzo's masterpiece" (Robert McCrum Observer)"A splendid and distinguished blood saga of the Cosa Nostra, the American Mafia, and of the whirl created by five families of mafiosi at war in New York" (Sunday Times)"Puzo's genius was to create a world so thick with personality and acknowledged rules of behaviour, along with its crime and violence, that reading his books becomes a seriously guilty pleasure" (New York Post)

It maybe the wrong way round to do this but it never has been a trait of mine to read a book before seeing the film version. But I have come to realise, on many occasions, that the book is often far more satisfying to read than seeing the film version. And so it is with The Godfather, as much as I enjoyed the film, the book is a much more fullfilling story, more rounded if I can put it that way. But having seen the film first gives me a visual image of the books characters and so enhances the reading experience, a very good book but the story needs no explanation from me.

I have read this book four times now, and every time I am completely absorbed and transported to the time and place. Is the book as good as, or better than, the movie? The two are so faithful to each other I can never decide so I will just have to keep reading and watching to keep comparing.

I enjoyed the film and thought I would read the book - although it's always best to read the book first. I was not disappointed. It's a real page turner and a very smooth read. The characters are excellently drawn and I would thoroughly recommend it.

I was looking for something to read while I was on holiday and a friend had recommended the book to me. For £1.99 on kindle I couldn't argue. What a brilliant piece of literature. I was never a massive fan of the films and I originally preferred Goodfellas. The book is one of the most complete stories I've ever read. The different books move a good pace while being interlaced with the history of all the important characters. It is clear that the author knows the entire history of the world he has created. I have since rewatched part 1 and can now see what a brilliant film it is and it stays so true to the book (the parts they used). If you like this genre you will love this book.

Having seen the film several times, I was expecting to find lots of discrepancies between the two, but there were that many. The film ha stuck very closely to the book something which is quite rare in book to screen adaptations. Whoever wrote the screenplay did a good job.The book is excellent. A story well told.

I'm half way through this book and it's a great page turner. I have not seen the films so don't know what is going to happen next and that is adding to the suspense. I will probably watch the films when I have finished the book. Well written and very evocative of a time and place in the relatively recent past. It's fun spotting the famous phrases and scenes from the films that everyone knows, such as the horse's head in the bed! Excellent read so far.

I have actually seen the film The Godfather,so I decided to read the book. I have now decided to watch the film again and can't wait to borrow the CD. If you have seen the film and haven't read the book or visa versa I suggest you go for it.

Cracking, easy to read story even if sometimes characters are a little less than credible.Certainly a key 20th century work of a 20th century situation though it has been suggested that certain nations (eg Russia) are run on similar lines today.
